At Norton, we place huge importance on encouraging each and every child to flourish, supporting them to be the very best they can in order to prepare them for life in modern Britain.
At Norton Church of England Primary School we provide stimulating and enjoyable lessons which support the children’s love for learning! Throughout their time in Year 5, all children will be supported in developing their sense of independence, individuality and finding their feet in upper KS2, in readiness for Year 6 and beyond.
Our topics this year will be: Ever changing Britain, WW2: bunkers, bombs and Blitz and Extreme earth.
We also have some excellent Science topics this year which include forces, materials, life cycles and Earth and space- which is always a firm favourite!

PE:
Our PE sessions this term are every Tuesday afternoon, so children need to wear their PE kits to school on this day.
Trips and experiences:
In the Autumn term, we get the opportunity to visit the Cheltenham literature festival to hear from a real author about the writing process. We also had Swimming Lessons and Violin Lesson.
In the Spring term, we have had a Geometric Problem solving day, First Aid Training, a Science day and Young Voices.
This Summer we will be going to Skillzone to learn about the British Criminal Justice System. We will also be singing and taking an active part in our wonderful School Play.

Reading
We expect children to be reading regularly at home: the benefits, both academic and social, are huge! In Year 5 the children take independence by filling in their reading records themselves, rather than the adults. We will regularly check their records and expect parents to sign them once a week.
Children are encouraged to borrow books from our class or school library and to bring in blankets for our cosy reading sessions in class. The link below takes you to ‘100 recommended books for Year 5’ as a guide to possible book choices for your child that they could source from local libraries.
We have also included a link to some home learning maths resources, so that you can join us with supporting your child to develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematics.
