At Norton, we place huge importance on encouraging each and every child to flourish, supporting them to be the very best they can in order to prepare them for life in modern Britain.
Year 5 is an exciting year where children are encouraged to become increasingly independent, confident and resilient learners. We want every child to enjoy coming to school, feel proud of their achievements and be inspired to discover new things.
In English, we will enjoy a range of high-quality books and texts, using these to inspire our reading, writing and discussion. We will develop our vocabulary, strengthen our understanding of grammar and punctuation, and become increasingly confident in expressing our ideas through our writing.
In Mathematics, we will build on our understanding of number, calculation, fractions, decimals and percentages, while developing our ability to solve problems and explain our mathematical thinking. We will be encouraged to persevere when faced with challenges and recognise that mistakes are an important part of learning.
We will also have lots of opportunities to work together, share ideas and support one another. Our classroom is a place where everyone is encouraged to strive, think, act and respect — reflecting our school Christian vision.
Most importantly, we want Year 5 to be a year filled with learning, laughter, challenge and memorable experiences. We are looking forward to seeing the children grow in confidence, develop their independence and discover just how much they can achieve.
PE:
Our PE day is Tuesday. Please can children come into school wearing their PE kit on these days.

Reading
We expect children to be reading regularly at home: the benefits, both academic and social, are huge! In Year 5 the children take independence by filling in their reading records themselves, rather than the adults. We will regularly check their records and expect parents to sign them once a week.
