At Norton C of E Primary School, music links closely with our school vision.
Children strive to develop their musical skills and confidence, think creatively and critically as musicians, act by expressing themselves through music and celebrating the musical achievements and traditions of others, and respect different cultures, musical styles and traditions, understanding that everyone has the right to express themselves.
Music teaching at Norton inspires children to develop a love and appreciation of music that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. We encourage children to be curious about music and to explore a wide range of musical styles, genres, cultures and traditions. Through listening, singing, composing, performing and learning musical instruments, children develop their creativity, confidence and understanding of the world around them.
Children develop a greater understanding and knowledge of music, as well as their place within the wider musical and cultural world. They are given opportunities to perform, share and celebrate music together, developing their ability to collaborate, communicate and express themselves.
Our curriculum is designed to develop children’s musical knowledge and skills progressively throughout their years at Norton and into their further education. Children are encouraged to become confident musicians who can appreciate, create and perform music, whilst developing a lifelong enjoyment of and engagement with music.
We are fully inclusive and appropriate adaptations are made for children with additional needs so that they can access and participate in the music curriculum. Every child is given the opportunity to experience, enjoy and succeed in music, regardless of their starting point or level of musical ability.
Clarinet Lessons – A Musical Journey for Years 3&4
Over the past ten weeks, our Year 3 and 4 students have embarked on an exciting musical journey, learning to play the clarinet as part of their music curriculum. Through these lessons, they have developed essential skills that form the foundation of wind instrument playing.
Students began by mastering the correct hold, ensuring control and fluidity in their movements.
As their confidence grew, they learned to play simple melodies, following musical notation with increasing accuracy. A highlight of their learning was the opportunity to improvise within sections of a piece, allowing them to express their creativity while staying within the structure of the music.
These lessons have not only introduced our students to the joy of playing an instrument but have also deepened their understanding of rhythm, pitch, and musical expression. We are incredibly proud of their progress and look forward to seeing how they continue to develop their musical talents in the future!
