Mathematics Intent: Norton C of E Primary
Our beliefs: We believe that mathematical ability is not fixed. We are developing the mindsets of children and adults alike to develop a Growth Mindset and a ‘We Can’ attitude to Mathematics. We believe that through quality first teaching and intelligent practice, children learning together and immediate intervention that all children have the potential to ‘go deeper’ and broaden their understanding of mathematical concepts.
Strong Foundations in Maths: At Norton, we prioritise foundational knowledge across the school, especially in the Early Years. We regularly assess and review children’s understanding of core concepts through a series of “Ready to Progress” statements to ensure children understand and can use the fundamentals in mathematics and are ready for their next stage of learning.
Curriculum: At Norton we follow the White Rose Scheme of work which follows the National Curriculum for maths. The small steps planning of White Rose allows the time for children to understand the concept being taught and put it into practice. This gives children both procedural practice and the opportunity to develop their reasoning, problem solving and explanation skills in Maths.

Helping your child with maths (it’s more fun than you think!)
Many people think they “can’t do maths”, but with exciting new teaching approaches, we’re proving day by day that every child really can love and succeed in maths! What’s more, we want to make it as easy as possible for you to support your child’s learning, so here are some helpful tips from the White Rose Maths team.
Try not to hurry through the curriculum.
Remember that understanding each small step is the path to your child’s success: rushing ahead doesn’t work!
Is your child struggling with particular topics?
Try looking instead at work on the same topics from earlier in the year or previous years. Doing this will help plug any learning gaps and make sure your child understands the topic more clearly.
Is your child finding maths easy?
Why not have a go at some of the problem-solving activities or bar modelling problems? These are great exercises for stretching young minds and building new skills and insights!
