Year 1 is an exciting and important stage in a child’s learning journey, where the foundations for future success are firmly established. As children transition from the Early Years into more structured learning, they begin to build essential skills in reading, writing, and mathematics while developing confidence, independence, and a love of learning.
A key focus in Year 1 is developing foundational knowledge—the core understanding and skills that underpin all future learning. In literacy, children deepen their phonics knowledge, enabling them to read with increasing fluency and write simple sentences with growing accuracy. In mathematics, they explore number sense, including counting, place value, and basic addition and subtraction, helping them to understand how numbers work in everyday contexts.

Our PE sessions this term are every afternoon, so children need to wear their PE kits to school on this day.
Trips and experiences:
In the Autumn term, we get the opportunity to visit the Cheltenham literature festival to hear from a real author about the writing process.
In the Spring term, we take part in a Traditional Story workshop to enhance the children’s story telling and sequencing skills.
In the Summer Term, we take a visit to the John Moore museum.
